DIY Toothpaste and Mouthwash

Why Make Your Own Toothpaste?

Many mainstream brands of toothpastes contain harmful or even toxic ingredients such as:

  • Triclosan, a pesticide and hormone disruptor.
  • Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) which causes canker sores for many people.
  • Artificial colorings linked to ADHD and hyperactivity in children. Toothpaste does not need to be blue!
  • Fluoride, which can be toxic if swallowed and doesn’t even work in toothpaste.
  • Titanium dioxide, which is added to make a toothpaste white. Most of the data shows it’s safe and is not absorbed by the skin, but I have yet to find a study done to measure absorption by oral tissues.  It’s just there to make toothpaste white, not improve your health. So why bother with it?
  • Glycerin, which isn’t toxic, but has no place in the mouth as it’s a soap that strips your body’s natural oral mucosa and leaves a film. This film could coat the teeth, messing with the structure of the biofilm which could alter the microbiome in the mouth and impact the natural remineralization process — your body’s natural cavity-fighting mechanism.
  • Highly abrasive ingredients, which damage enamel, making teeth sensitive and more prone to gum recession and cavities. Toothpaste should be only a little bit abrasive — this graininess aids the brushing motion to remove the biofilm of the tooth.

The benefits of homemade mouthwash

There are multiple benefits for creating your own mouthwash. Here is a list of benefits:

  • Inexpensive – Homemade mouthwash will be a fraction of the cost of store bought mouthwashes with the same or better performance
  • No harmful chemicals – Manufacturers often include dyes, preservatives, artificial sweeteners, and other chemicals that are harmful to you or the environment. When you make your own mouthwash, you know exactly what is it and can tender it to your needs.
  • Alcohol-free – It is hard to find quality mouthwash that does not contain alcohol which dries out the mouth and causes bad breath. If you make your own you can choose not to include alcohol.
  • You control the quality of ingredients – When you make your own mouthwash you may choose to use ingredients of only the finest quality. In order to optimize profits some manufactures may choose to cut costs by using ingredients of questionable quality.

10 easy uses for Essential Oils

Inhale. Apply. Ingest. Soak. There are all kinds of ways to fall in love with Young Living’s therapeutic grade essential oils and oil-infused products! Need a little encouragement to open the box and break out your oils? Here are a few ideas to get you started:

1  Need a lift on a rainy day? Try diffusing a little “sunshine”! Add 6-10 drops of Citrus Fresh to your diffuser and just breathe. Almost as nice as a day on the beach! Well, almost.

2 Have you TASTED Ningxia Red yet?! I’m pretty sure it’ll become your new addiction once you do. One-two ounces a day boost your immune system and oil the wheels of wellness! A drop or two of your favorite citrus oil turns your daily treat into something extra delish. Try Lemon, Grapefruit, Orange, or Tangerine for a fun twist!

3 Want to feel like royalty? Try starting the day with a drop of Frankincense on the crown of your forehead. Frankincense was so valued in ancient Middle Eastern cultures that it was one of three gifts given to the Christ-child. (Two out of three were essential oils. Cool, right?!)

4 Looking for a little R&R? One of our favorite ways to enjoy the oily goodness of essential oils is in a relaxing bath. Try this for starters: ½ cup Epsom salts, ½ cup baking soda, 8-10 drops of the oil or oils of your choice. One of our favorite combos is Purification and Lavender.

5 To make a guest feel extra special or help a child ease into sweet dreams, put a drop of Lavender on your hands, rub gently together, then slide your hands over their pillow. Add a drop of Cedarwood or Stress Away with the Lavender if you like.

6 Did you know that a study found that the absorption rate of Young Living’s MultiGreens doubled once essential oils were added to the supplement? Try your own “therapeutic trial” by subbing one of Young Living’s nutritional supplements with one (of a different brand) that you’ve been using. See for yourself and let me know what you think!

7 Essential oils are awesome in the kitchen! Try adding a drop or two of Lime or Lemon the next time you whip up some guacamole.  Or, try a drop of Taste of Italy in your pasta, WOW!

8 Who likes an easy DIY?! Try this idea so you’ve got natural relief ready the next time someone needs a little pick-me-up. This would also make for a fun “Make and Take” project with friends. Or an awesome shower gift. (See what I did there? wink)

9 Need a little help unwinding after a day in front of the computer? (Or the kitchen stove?!) Try a squirt or two of Young Living’s Ortho Ease massage gel along with a couple drops of Panaway. Rub gently over the sore spots or, better yet, find someone to massage it in for you!

10 If any of the above feels too hard, too DIY, too complicated, too “out there” for you, then try this for starters: Add one drop of Lemon to a glass of water. That’s it! It’ll freshen the taste and hopefully get you drinking more water. And taking one simple step is better than nothing.

Tomorrow you can try adding a drop of Lemon to an ounce of Ningxia Red. You’ll be an oily guru in no time!
